Women in the NFL

When have you ever seen a woman coaching an NFL team? Probably never, but that all just changed.  Jen Welter, former rugby player and vet of the Women’s Football Alliance, just became a preseason intern coach for the Arizona Cardinals. This job says so much about where sports and our nation are going in how women are being treated.  Some are appalled by the idea of a woman in the NFL, however, and, to me, I find ridiculous.  Men and women alike are scolding her for being a part of the NFL because she is a woman and the football field apparently isn’t where they belong. “This ranks higher on the stupid scale than that female replacement ref.” Do people think that women are stupid when it comes to sports? If so, they are quite mistaken. “Women have no place in a mans sport, they should be home cooking and taking care of the children.”  Women are not bound to the kitchen and home anymore, people. “Women need to stop trying to force themselves into our sports and stay within their own. There’s a reason why women’s sports suck and nobody watches.” It blows my mind that people can be so rude and judgmental about her.  Jen Welter getting to be a part of the coaching team for an NFL team puts a huge statement out there to all women that you can do anything you set your mind to, even if it is stereo-typically male dominated.  I applaud Jen Welter for being brave enough to go for this position and show all women about what hard work can do.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your post because I have strong feelings of women being marginalized for their gender. I will praise the day a woman can play alongside or recognized to be in this field because it very empowering to account for being a strong feminist in a masculine world. I agree with you in the pompous remarks that men have made to refrain women in being in the NFL, I think it is enlightening and should be that women find interest in football just as much as men, and to say these things are to repress and disregard women completely because of the association with the sport.

  2. You chose a great blog topic. I completely agree with your viewpoints. The fact that men are even bold enough to say that “Women have no place in a man’s’ sport, they should be home cooking and taking care of the children” is extremely vulgar. I personally support Jen Welter one hundred and ten percent. I know that this will be the first step in women making greater gains into the NFL and other ‘man’ sports. Of course we’ll never play with them (which is fair), but now we can show them who’s boss this time and gain a little more respect for what we stand for.
